Mandatory Summer Reading

No. It is not embarrassing that I bought Lauren (or rather, ahem, LC) Conrad's book within the week it was released. It's not embarrassing that I devoured it in one day (in my cubicle at work, no less). It's not even embarrassing that I loved every page of it. I have zero shame when it comes to reading material. Nicole Richie's book? Have it, read it multiple times. Every single Gossip Girl book? Have them, read them to shreds. Valley of the Dolls (the original scandalous chick lit novel, if you ask me)? Read it for the first time when I was fourteen (yeah, my mom was proud - sarcasm). What is embarrassing is the lengths that I went to obtain a copy of LA Candy.

Remember in college, when that jerk professor would assign about 90 books with one being absolutely impossible to find? Not at any local bookstore. No one seemed to have a copy. And finally you'd just give up and decide that you can pass the class without it? That was my hunt for my own personal mandatory summer reading, LA Candy. I went last Thursday, after reading The Cut's review to my local Borders. I was positive they'd have a copy, if not many, maybe even a table full of them. But no. Not a single copy, "sold out" the dorky MIT-style salesboy told me, mystified. I checked at the Barnes & Noble (in Boston and in my suburban hometown, in hopes that my mother could get it to me). Sold out. I'm not sure when this happened, but somehow getting a copy of LA Candy was more difficult than finding sunshine in Boston these days (sad but true). I resorted to my trusty online skills and ordered myself a copy. And waited for the UPS delivery person. For days and days. When Matt, the person that handles deliveries at my office handed me the small, cardboard wrapped box this morning. I squealed. I kid you not. Squealed. He even asked me some question after that I just kind of nodded my head at without really knowing what he just asked. Hopefully he didn't ask for a date or anything too extreme.

Substance-wise? Meet reality television star Laur--I mean Jane Roberts. She has best friend Scarlett and reality tv besties Madison and Gaby. Scarlett is a feminist USC (hey, didn't Lo Bosworth go there before transferring?) freshman. Jane interns for a bitchy boss (hello Teen Vogue's Lisa Love) who is nice only on camera. Madison is a backstabbing two-faced attention hog (wonder who this reminds me of). Gaby is, "not the brightest crayon in the box" (Hmmmm. I wonder). Although LC swears that the characters and situations are fictional, I just don't quite believe it. Afterall, reading it and wondering if Heidi and Audrina are like this in person makes the read that much more enjoyable.

Truth is stranger than fiction

Set to release June 16, 2009, MTV The Hills' Lauren "LC" Conrad's book "L.A. Candy" is already listed on amazon.com...check out the preview:

Los Angeles is all about the sweet life: hot clubs, cute guys, designer . . . everything. Nineteen-year-old Jane Roberts can't wait to start living it up. She may be in L.A. for an internship, but Jane plans to play as hard as she works, and has enlisted her BFF Scarlett to join in the fun.

When Jane and Scarlett are approached by a producer who wants them to be on his new series, a "reality version of Sex and the City," they can hardly believe their luck. Their own show? Yes, please!

Soon Jane is TV's hottest star. Fame brings more than she ever imagined possible for a girl from Santa Barbara—free designer clothes, the choicest tables at the most exclusive clubs, invites to Hollywood premieres—and she's lapping up the VIP treatment with her eclectic entourage of new pals. But those same friends who are always up for a wild night are also out for a piece of Jane's spotlight.

In a city filled with people chasing after their dreams, it's not long before Jane wakes up to the reality that everyone wants something from her, and nothing is what it seems to be.

L.A. Candy is a deliciously entertaining novel about what it's like to come of age in Hollywood while starring in a reality TV show, written by a girl who has experienced it all firsthand: Lauren Conrad.

Ugh...as much as I hate to admit it, this definitely sounds like the kind of trash I would devour in one sitting...perfect beach/poolside read. Although apparently Gawker does NOT share my thoughts. LOL. Oh well...

Will you read it when it comes out?

Fashion Roundup!

According to Women's Wear Daily and NYMag's The Cut, our ever-favorite cheap teenage girl jewelry store is in trouble (but where isn't in this economy?). I lament at this news because where else can I possibly run in, purchase cheap nail polish that smells like perfume (no lie, I had a CK Be scented top coat circa 1999) and headbands with feathers all over them? Or best yet, where can an underage girl purchase a flask (sarcasm intended) anymore? Sigh. Worst.news.ever!

Pop Culture Paradox's outfit of the day award goes to Lauren Conrad as she leaves Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt's wedding (early!). Love the blue dress - the belted waist gives it a bit of a feel of this dress by Theory. Major points on her Louboutins (how high are those heels?!) and matching Chanel tote. Triple points for supposedly leaving after the ceremony, before the bouquet toss even happened.

California Style Everywhere

So while LC's actual clothing line is on hold for a few seasons, Ms. Conrad is in the works of creating an 'affordable' line for Kohls. Great news for recessionistas everywhere. Maybe someone clued her in that no one is in the right economic state to spend over $100.00 on a jersey dress. Good move LC. Good move.

The Hills Are Alive (with drama)

Everyone's (especially mine and P's) favorite guilty pleasure, The Hills made it's return to MTV's Monday nights - and hallejuah that it's back so I don't have to suffer through episodes of The City anymore. While it might be LC's last season (tear!), the show is still as good as ever. In the hour of The Hills drama last night, viewers saw basically everything that was in the season 5 trailer. Spencer being a skeeze (typical) and hitting on a bartender (classy)! Spencer getting into a barfight! Heidi showing up at LC's birthday party! Heidi running home to Colorado! Now that I think of it, other than LC just being there in a few scenes, she's basically written out of major storylines. Regardless, her red lipstick looked fantastic on last night's show.

Next week brings The Hills at it's normal 10pm timeslot and MTV's new show, College Life at 10:30pm. A throwback to freshman year of college? Count me in, I always love to reminsce.

Topshop, Britney Spears and Lauren Bush -- All Making Waves In Fashion Today!

The lovely people over at The Cut made Lauren Bush's clothing line, Lauren Pierce known to myself and my eyes and while, I'm sure politically we may differ, we can agree on style. Check out the designs in the image above and drool over the dress on the far-left with me. Mmmhmm. Perfect for summer barbecues and beach bonfire nights, count me in for needing a trip to Barneys to pick some of these pieces up.

Even more exciting than the dip-dye dress of my dreams is this promotion that Topshop did in NYC in light of the opening of the first US Topshop store on April 2nd. That's right, you read that correctly. Free giftcards handed out valued up to $500. Have you any clue what I'd do if some lady on the street handed me a $500 giftcard to one of my favorite stores (aside from think it was a scam)? Ingenius. I'm not sure if it'll make Topshop profits though, as I think $500 could buy quite enough of Kate Moss's designs.

P brought this interview to my attention last night (when it was an ungodly 4am hour in her time zone - get some sleep!) which elicited some ooh's and aah's from my laptop. Dsquared has always done Ms. Spears well. Who can ever forget this hot green costume Brit-Brit sported at the VMAs during her I'm A Slave For You days? I always did want to pull off such a costume around Halloween, but alas, my abs of steel will never match Britney's.

Oh Lady GaGa... wait. That's not Lady GaGa. Apparently Nicole Richie can pull off a fierce, bluntly cut bang too when she wants to.

***

Recanting what every blogger (including myself) reported a few days ago, Lauren Conrad sets the record straight. Have no fear, her and her clothing line will be back. Well then, thank goodness, I can sleep at night knowing that I can forever have pricey cotton dresses available at my disposal again.

In complete sad designer news. Tiffany & Co is suffering in this economy as well. According to this article, the company won't lower prices (maybe rightfully so?) but in this economy, can they afford not to? Do I need to run out and buy myself a lifetime's worth of champagne flutes before doors close? Maybe I'm getting too far ahead of myself, but nonetheless, life without a little blue box just feels so empty.

Fashion Roundup

So what if it's twenty-freaking-five lousy degrees in Boston, MA this week? My mind is on spring fashion -- and no, I'm not talking about resortwear that's meant to be worn on holiday -- I mean full out, real, t-shirt-short skirt-sundress style spring clothes. I'm getting so sick of my black pinstriped pants that I may have a commemorative bonfire on the first day it strikes 70 degrees in the city.

Anyway, a few notes on the fashion world as it stands right now. A big R.I.P. goes out to Lauren Conrad's fashion line. What will she do now? No more Hills episodes after this season. No more clothing line. What will she... oh, right. If I made 60k per episode I made, I'd quit working and spend my days inside Bloomingdales too.

On a far lighter note, apparently Matthew Williamson is creating a line for H&M. The trusty bloggers over at The Cut got their hands on a slideshow of some of the pieces and I must say, I am impressed. Very impressed. I have my eyes on the peacock inspired dress. Hot.

Finally, opinions are wanted in regards to Christian Siriano's new shoe line for Payless. That's right, I said it. Payless. Before you're quick to judge and throw these shoes by the trash, take a look. In this recession, times are tough and a pair of Louboutins are just not in the picture for most of us. So how do we feel about the shoes that Siriano offers? I see only two pairs I'd dare try. How do we feel about the prices of between $25 and $45? Very good. Very very good.

The Hills for The Win!

While watching the worst show ever, I was happily surprised by the trailer for the next season of the best show ever. I nearly squealed at the sight of Lauren, Lo, Stephanie - and yes - even Spencer and Heidi on my television. I feel that I've watched Whitney Port's tired show so much that I forgot why I watch MTV reality television in the first place, and then they put me right back in my place by showing me this gem of a preview.

In college, P and I would rally up our friends and watch The Hills every week in the comfort of my dorm room (with the especially comfy futon that I kept for an extending time post-breakup with a guy). We'd tear into Ben & Jerry's ice cream, kettle corn and diet Coke with lemon as we gave our opinions on Spencer (looks like a gremlin, ew) and Audrina (why does it always look like she's reading a cue card?) and Lo (love her!).

While it won't quite be the same without P in the same country as I (tear!) I'm sure we'll dissect and tear apart every episode in front of you dear readers. Feel free to join in on the conversation!
