Why the eff is her name Lady GaGa?
- Christina Aguilera - Keeps Gettin' Better
- Little Jackie - The World Should Revolve Around me
- NKOTB - Big Girl Now
- Lady GaGa's debut album The Fame.
I'll admit. I was completely apprehensive before giving Lady GaGa a second chance. I was obsessed with 'Just Dance,' if only because Akon was in it and I love anything that Akon sings in (it's a standard M music rule). I listened to her leaked demos of some of the songs on the album and was severely unimpressed. Finally, I gave her album a random listening to, and I have to say, it's good. Real good. She does electropop as good as Imani Coppola (don't know her? take a listen.) circa 1999. She's kind of quirky though, in the way that kind of freaks me out. After taking a peek at her wikipedia page it freaks me out even more that she's younger than me. Here I am wasting away in corporate America, drinking too much coffee and blogging to look productive and this chick is younger than me and writing songs for Britney Spears' new album. Some girls have all the luck.
Jealousy aside. No questions asked, this girl is good. I'll let her fashion choices slide -- she gets styled by Whitney Port afterall! And LC fixes her zippers! She does Gwen Stefani style music better than Stefani herself - ironic with GaGa's real name: (Stefani Germanotta). Hrm. No wonder she changed her name.
M's picks off the album: Paparazzi, Lovegame, Eh Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say), Poker Face.

"I'm not some delicate little flower!"
As expected, most of the highlights from last night's Gossip Girl were all in the promos. I feel like a girl that just spent $10 on a movie whose best moments were from the preview that could be found on Apple.com. There were, however, a few not-so-meaningless notes to point out.
S is upset over B, her queen bee-eff-eff, not being over the moon about her newly found relationshipdom with Lonely Boy. Boo freakin hoo S, but here's a newsflash. None of us really care. Why? Lonely Boy has become more obnoxious and more whiny than ever. His teeth are increasingly bothering me with every episode. And clearly he has an issue with Serena's social status. Still. Also annoying? S and Lonely Boy spend the entire episode stuck in an elevator during a NYC blackout. What do they do? Squabble, argue and eventually breakup. If I were stuck in an elevator during a blackout, believe me, I can think of much better things to do. I haven't hooked up with anyone in an elevator since I was eighteen and believe me, it was hot, and now overdue. Maybe I need to find an elevator asap... Shame on you S for not taking the bait. Tsk tsk.
Another Gossip Girl thought from last night? Did anyone else see a red flag with the Lord not wanting to do Blair as she asked? Something just screams gay about him - I'm sensing the next "big plot twist."
Also on last night? The latest installment of The Hills. Mostly anti-climatic. GASP. LC dines with Holly (Heidi's sister -- does their mother really hate them or something? It's one unforch combination of names). Although my personal favorite scene was with Audrina's meeting with her boss at Epic Records. While her boss stresses the importance of the upcoming gig (with The White Tie Affair, who I love!!), Audrina's glazed over eyes just stare. No blinking, and no sign of any type of brain activity. I wonder what she's thinking about. Is she counting sheep? Counting how many men she's slept with? Counting how many days it's been since Justin Bobby last showered? Is she thinking anything at all?
In more (or less) important news. MTV has decided to cancel TRL. I haven't watched it since the departure of Carson Daly (the apple of my 8th grader eye). But still, it's rather sad. Where will MTV premiere Brit Brit's new video now? What about if *NSync reunite a la New Kids on the Block? Where else can girls gush about teenybopper pop music and have it be socially acceptable now? Can TRL just be like Mom's really good china dishes and be taken out when really really needed? Because I'm still holding out for a *NSync reunion, and I don't think my older co-workers will share in my excitement. Where will I find people equally excited as I?

Fashion + Democracy
What I have been thinking about for a really long time is this kind of democracy of fashion.
"Generally, we'd applaud the use of non-models in a fashion book. But we usually reserve our "thanks for not using anorexic models" applause for those who don't substitute them with "skinny because of malnourishment" persons." - Jossip
"Vulgar, tacky and distasteful." - Kanika Gahlaut, columnist for an Indian daily newspaper
Vogue India editor Priya Tanna, defending her decision, said:
"Lighten up...Vogue is about realizing the 'power of fashion' and the shoot was saying that 'fashion is no longer a rich man’s privilege.' Anyone can carry it off and make it look beautiful. You have to remember with fashion, you can’t take it that seriously. We weren’t trying to make trying to make a political statement or save the world."
My question is...how can you NOT be making a statement with that kind of photoshoot? She, if anyone, should know that anything you put out there in the marketplace of ideas is SURE to have an impact...couldn't she at least TRY and have it be a positive one?
In a seperate statement, she said:
"As with any other creative pursuit, fashion feeds and thrives on fantasy, aspirations and above all fun."
Hmmm...she's essentially implying that by putting a $100 Fendi bib on a baby she is somehow democratizing high-end fashion...but doesn't that kind of point to the whole 'pull yourself up by the bootstraps' ideology that people keep dumping on underprivileged people? Does nobody get that these people often remain trapped in a vicious cycle of poverty, which stems from lack of proper education, housing, development-related policies?
EDIT: Just found a fantastic comparison to the white man's burden by someone at my fav. 'desi' blog, Sepia Mutiny:
"There's this parallel in that, a century and a half ago, you had Westerners looking at India and saying, 'Oh, those poor, poor, savages-let's go preach Christianity to them and civilize them!' And now, here we are, and Vogue India is basically saying, the same thing-except they're proselytizing to them with products. They're saying, 'Let's convert the wretched masses to the church of Fendi.'"
As the world's largest democracy, India sure has seen some good-times lately...a fact I am even more aware of every time I visit and am dragged by eager cousins to malls that stock up on Mango, Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, Dior and Tiffany's.
I do understand the need for people to feel like they can aspire towards "better" things, isn't that what ambition and consumerism are mostly all about? But those people in India are part of the burgeoning middle-class...and not the people featured in Vogue's fashion spread. I wonder, would the pictures have been less offensive if the models had been a part of the English-speaking, 'convent' educated, 'tall, fair and slim' elite?
Welcome to New India indeed.
